Tshilidzi Primary School
HLM
South Africa
Tshilidzi school hall, inspired by simple, yet playful forms, is adaptable in its form and function to allow it to address varying climatic conditions and the school’s needs and functions.
Tshilidzi Primary school is located to the South Western edge of Soweto Township in Gauteng, South Africa. At Tshilidzi, the high level of education is juxtaposed by the lack of certain facilities available at the school. From an academic perspective, the school is well placed to serve its students apart from the lack of a school hall and classrooms. The brief that was determined was that of a flexible space that could address the school’s various needs. A versatile school hall was designed to provide shelter, educational facilities and a landmark to the Chaiwelo community by encouraging community involvement. Creating rentable facilities for community meetings and events is a possible much need revenue stream for the school. The building, inspired by simple, yet playful forms, is adaptable in its form and function to allow it to address varying climatic conditions and the school’s needs and functions. Due to budgetary constraints, the design allows for simple elements and finishes that can be enhanced as funds become available. Creating a rustic play of textures and a level of porosity in the building, the building forms a narrative between the needs and users of the site. Opening panels along the longer sides of the building were designed to create a covered spill over space for when the proposed facility has reached its capacity. Overhead classrooms transform into a gallery space for the hall when needed. The Tshilidzi School hall and community centre will create a building that can enrich the lives of not only the school children, but also community members by providing a space for school and community activities. By instilling a sense of pride in our communities, we can improve the future and make Tshilidzi School a place that current and future generations are proud to call their own.
