Lagos, Nigeria is the fastest growing city in Africa. Home to almost 25 million inhabitants, it is a crowded and chaotic knot of human resilience, commercial enterprise and a complex social infrastructure. It is simultaneously a place of great optimism and social ingenuity as well as extreme poverty, over-crowding, failing infrastructure and nightmarish traffic. The Shanty Mega-structures Project re-imagines Lagos in a not-too-distant future by juxtaposing sites of privileged and much coveted real-estate with colossal vertical settlements rendered in the constructive language of the shanties and informal settlements that exist at the city’s peripheries. It’s a visual conversation about how slums are frequently viewed as unsightly eyesores to be bull-dozed,leaving their inhabitants completely displaced. So in this instance they are given prominence and visibility through a heterotopian vision that acknowledges the resilience, practices of adaptive re-use and sustainability by necessity, and the highly self-organized nature of these communities.
