PAMUDZI (Malawian Village)
Millennium Arts - Malawi
Pamudzi uses the Malawian Village Hut Design as its concept, the round hut design is more rigid to natural forces as opposed to the generic design and it stands out as the face of Malawian Traditional Architecture. Pamudzi design is the future embodiment of the Malawian Village Hut Design since it uses the same sustainable materials and design ideologies used in the traditional Malawian Architecture but in a more innovative and sustainable way. It has been demonstrated that Malawi is facing serious resource depletion and environmental impacts. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider the choice of materials. It has been noted that careful selection of sustainable materials is the easiest and the beginning of incorporating sustainable principles in building projects ( Akadiri & Olomolaiye , 2012). Pamudzi Project is designed to teach the world that the already existing traditional methods of building and design in Malawi are sustainable but can be improved by incorporating innovative ideas such as; use of local materials, use of local labour, technology transfer, innovative building methods, durability and maintenance, re-usability and waste management. Pamudzi Project, will be built using locally sourced materials closest to the site, such as the use of rammed earth and stone for the structures, this will avoid the high carbon emitting unsustainable practices; for example, the use of burnt bricks, which are mostly used in 90% of Malawian construction. Pamudzi will also encourage labour intensive construction activities to create employment and economic growth to the people closest to the site. For the imported parts of the building, assembly will be done on site to encourage training and technology transfer. Pamudzi Design incorporates innovative methods of construction such as the use of agricultural based materials and products, stroll as reinforcement in the rammed earth. In order for the Pamudzi design to be sustainable, it is designed to serve the current generation and is in consideration of the future generations. Pamudzi design focuses on the sustainable life cycle of the materials. Additionally, this project has a variety of materials integrated together, accordingly there is the need for good quality detailing in construction drawings, and the use of stone in the construction will withstand natures forces. The materials such as soil in rammed earth construction has been used for centuries in Malawi. Therefore, there is a need for the availability of skilled local labour to maintain it, and train others so that it remains durable on the Pamudzi project. The extra long eaves help to protect the rammed earth part of the design from heavy rains, and the grass thatched roof also helps to moderate indoor temperatures since it acts as an insulator. The use of materials such as stone also has an advantage on the reduction of the costs since the surface of the stone can be used as it is as a finishing on its own without incorporating other finishes. Pamudzi (Malawian Village Design) celebrates the Malawian traditional way of building which is emphasized in all the building materials and shape.

Banana.Door.Bench Banana Tree is one of the most used building material in Africa, it represents all the natural locally environmental building materials, use in this building design. Door represents the way forward into future African Architecture and the generation of endless opportunities in the advancement of innovative design. Bench, the Pamudzi design works as a bench mark of Malawian traditional Architectural style.
