The house in the Great Karoo acts as a harvester of light and air that connects its inhabitants to the natural world. Internal spaces are differentiated by views and volume. Insulated roughcast plaster walls and sliding shutters and doors allow for the modulation of heat and light.

The design of the new building for the Chemical Sciences Department and Geology Department was to provide teaching and tutorial facilities for students, as well as practical teaching laboratories, reflecting the language used in the neighboring Life Science Building.

Embedded in the rural Burundi mountainside, this 18-bed Staff Housing is a romance between East African elemental aesthetics and inventive off-the grid sustainability. The design responds to the concern that just because the villagers are poor, there was no reason why their housing could not be forward thinking and beautiful.

The community of Chimphamba (Malawi) have been gathering for years in a church building that was near to collapse. The community has also outgrown the dilapidated building. A4AC designed and managed the construction of this building inspired by the existing and familiar elements in the community.

The Department of Higher Education and Training decided to build two new universities in Mpumalanga and in the Northern Cape. In 2013 an architectural competition was launched whereby architects throughout South Africa were invited to submit designs to be considered for an appointment for specific buildings for each university project.

H2OS is an eco-village prototype in Africa against desertification, school dropouts and emigration. It is an open-source, autonomous and sustainable project.

Defying gravity, cantilevered spaces. The core energy of the building is to fashion a point of view where one can stand and see it all. Philosophically, it is the merger of geometries, light and volumes that exudes the genius loci without explicitly showing its inner workings.

The maternity waiting village is a prototype strategy which offers a safe, comfortable, and dignified environment for expectant mothers. Taking its inspiration from Malawian vernacular, clustered units create a replicable “village” that features not only sufficient daylighting, ventilation, and hygienic conditions, but a set of familiar community spaces for women.
