Making intends to express the ideals of protoLAB as an academic unit. It is a compilation of students’ work that demonstrates the didactic input and concepts they received and the outcomes produced. The agenda of this book is to show the creative process of making and its relevance to Architecture.

‘Africa’ has become a lazy substitute for any number of ideas from the political to the social, cultural, historical and economic. In this issue, we reject stereotypes and, from refugee camps to Art Deco housing, starchitects to wooden skyscrapers, counter the notion of Africa as a place to be influenced.

This book chapter revisits the history and practice of design (broadly understood) as it relates to Africa, interrogates themes of post/colonialism, sustainability and identity, considers the potential of design practices in the creation of African decolonial futures, and outlines the beginnings of a framework specific to the Angolan Context.

The annual Design Indaba Conference is held in Cape Town, South Africa. Over its 22-year existence we’ve seen architecture, and its ability to foster indigenous solutions, emerge as one of the key creative industries in Africa. Each year, we invite the African architects at the forefront of this movement to share their work on the Design Indaba Stage.

The ‘Reviver’ campaign is a program to 'Protect the Cultural Heritage of Luanda City'. We created the 'Slave Route' from the architectural and urban memory of the historical city center. We prevent the extinction with surveys and building rehabilitation proposals as well as revitalization of public space.

The Positive Numbers project is not simply 'one thing': It involves enumeration processes in partnership with active NGOs, signage and way-finding for residents in the settlement and links to a larger short-to-long term upgrading strategy known as the Community Action Plan (CAP).

UP UP – Stories of Johannesburg’s Highrises presents a selection of buildings in Johannesburg. Witnesses to profound shifts in the political history, the skyscrapers are documented firstly through historical facts, floor plans, archival records and contemporary photographs of their formal architecture and secondly, through reportage, interviews and essays.
