With vertiginous urban growth that many African cities are suffering, including Luanda with approximately 1/3 of the population of Angola, checking a rapid and uncontrolled urbanization of cities, where 57% of the population lives in urban areas, it is urgent to adopt new urban planning approaches starting from a thorough study of rural settlements. “Kimbópolis” concept – Neologism created to describe a new urban approach in rural areas, without breaking their habits and customs, building techniques and environment, but rather organizing, modernizing and systematizing them to form an city embryo (polis), with reference to the socio-spatial organization of rural communities (kimbo) where the coexistence and solidarity are the most striking features. From rural habitat and habits to urban housing in the “kimbópolis” – It is known that one of the most striking features in the Angolan housing, even with all the ethnic and climatic diversity is likely to be out of preference house in the shade of a tree, porch, courtyard, etc. In this the “habitat”, assumes major role that the private housing that only serves as a shelter for the night. This habitat is developed various daytime and evening activities, where women play a major role in daytime activities and men in the night. This urbanization process is intended to gradually change some habits and rural realities such as the use of latrines. The concept of urban gardens is designed to avoid abrupt rupture of the relationship with the rural habits, and also to ensure some food sustenance. The previously shown domestic activities can perfectly fit the urban model of “patio house” , where the indoor / outdoor kitchen directly related to the courtyard is very important. New urban approach: “Kimbópolis” Evolutive twins houses in narrow and deep plots (12m x 30m) benefited by a progressive infrastructure (roads on compacted soil, water points, etc.), creating a modular urban unit , constituted by 10 plots (9 for houses and one for community courtyard) reinterpreting the configuration of a kimbo, were the strategies were adopted for the gradual and sustainable urbanization, also considering areas for public facilities. The replication of this urban modular unit, with at least three housing typologies, to avoid monotony, will produce an urban tissue that reflects the local social, economic and cultural aspects, tending to constitution a city of embryo.
