Migrant Housing Unit
Architecture for a Change - South Africa
Currently the approach towards the provision of housing at the mines is a conventional one (formal built housing). The problem is that 90% of the workers are migrant. Once the mine close, then the people re-locate to their place of origin. We therefore developed a mobile property.

BRITAM tower is a thirty storey 30,000sqm multi-tenanted development in Upper Hill, Nairobi. A 1200sqm square floor plate at ground level rotates through 45 degrees to exactly half at the penthouse. The glazed curtain wall is screened from solar radiation by a 'veil' of ceramic rods.

The architecture acts as an extension to the rocky hillside, with the occupants seemingly inhabiting a mountain face. The home is firmly rooted to the hillside through some impressive engineering, while also protruding out of the hillside as if it were shaped and morphed over time into its current condition.
